A Prayer for the Breeze

Today as I sit on the rocky shores of Maui, I am reminded of the breeze I felt on the cliffs of Amalphi, a continent and an ocean away. Sometimes it is the small simple things for which I need to pray and for which I need to show gratitude.

Dear Spirit of Nature,

You have been known by so many names, but what I call you matters little.

Today I pray for the breeze that blows across my face.

This breeze sets me free and yet this same breeze blows across the pacific touching other facs I will never know along the way.

I pray that I may always find time to be grateful for this strong ocean breeze,

For the way it moves me and caresses me, for the way it keeps me in the present.

I do not own the breeze but I am grateful to it and to the world of abundant love that created it.

Today, I pray for the breeze and pray that I may always be present enough to notice it.

Amen.

A Prayer for Ash Wednesday

IMG_20160210_192415

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray Matthew 6:5-6

Today is the Christian celebration of Ash Wednesday, a day that marks the beginning of the season of Lent which in turn ends in Easter. Today marks a special day, a day for a special prayer. Ash to ash, and dust to dust we pray together.

Dear God,

Today we mark the beginning and we honor the cycle.

We pray for those who are no longer here with us
and for those who are newly with us.

We pray that for all of us, praying to any and all of our Gods, that these next weeks be filled with fruitful self-reflection. We pray that they are filled with divine wisdom.

We recognize that this human life is uncertain and unpredictable, that it is also sweet and short.

We pray for the strength to be our best selves, to live lives of compassion, integrity and justice.

We pray that each day we are strengthened amazed by the fact that we are all made of stardust, and will all become stardust again.

Amen.

A Prayer for My Pet

Pets are often solace after a long day. They are our companions, our friends, indeed they are part of our families. Today, we pray for them.

Hey God,

Thank you for working with me and through me to bring my pet into my life.

My pet brings me joy in so many ways.

My pet gives the the opportunity to care for another creature.

My pet offers deep comfort to me when I cry.

Sometimes my pet helps me heal the rifts humans have made in my life.
Other times my pet has helped me be a better example of your love to other humans.

The joy and laughter my pet brings me reminds me that the universe is full of good things, even on the darkest days.

I am so grateful for this creature and its presence in my life.

Amen.

A Prayer for Joyous Moments

Not all moments are full of joy, not all lives are brimming with happy events, but we can always find a joyous moment or two even in the saddest times. They shine, not like beacons, but like tiny birthday candles in a field of darkness. They are glimpses of something better.

Dear God of Joy,

In the midst of my despair I have found a moment of joy,
and for this I am so grateful.

I am grateful to myself for taking the time to enjoy this joyous moment,
grateful to those who were there with me, and grateful to the moment itself.

This joyous moment has given me a glimmer of happiness.

This joyous moment has filled me with a sense of divine compassionate love.

Help me be a joyous moment for those in need of one,
and help me find joyous moments everywhere.

Amen.

A Prayer for Our Bodies

At every age, in every form, our bodies are with us, holding us. They are the embodiment of our hearts, our spirits, and our minds. So today we offer a prayer for our bodies.

Oh Divine Essence of the Universe,

I am praying for my body, for the ways it moves, and the ways it doesn’t,
for the parts of my body that provide me pleasure and the parts that are causing me pain.

My body is the temple of my soul, my spirit, and my heart. It is a place of embodied beauty.

My body has not always been kind to me, nor me to it. Sometimes I have not loved my body, sometimes I have not treated it well.

Let me meet my body in a place of peace.

I want to love my body, I want to be grateful for the things it does provide me, in its own unique way.

I also want to value the bodies of others, as temples of their souls and spirits.

I pray for the wisdom to honor all bodies.
I pray for the strength to love all bodies.
I pray for all bodies.

Amen.

A Prayer for Hope

For the second week of THE YEAR OF PRAYER, we wanted to offer this prayer for hope as we embark on our new journey, and our new year.

Dear Universal Spirit of Love and Light,

Give me hope during these trying days,

more importantly, help me find the hope and resilience within myself to be my best self,

to live my best dream and hope my biggest hopes.

Let me find ample and gracious support if my hopes are dashed,

and loving congratulations if they are achieved.

Let hope shine from every opportunity, from every interaction.

Let me find the strength to live in a hopeful place.

Amen

Another Prayer for New Beginnings

As we embark on THE YEAR OF PRAYER, we wanted to offer this prayer for our new journey and all the other new journeys starting this time of year. We have offered prayers before for new beginnings, but because we are all constantly beginning again, we offer this one as well.

sun

Dear Spirit of Creation,

Here I am again. Starting over, beginning anew. Each new journey is different, and each new journey leaves many possible paths untraveled.

Let me be reminded of why I chose this new beginning, let me bask in the hope of this new start.

I ask that this new start be filled with fresh ideas and steady support, with the excitement of newness and the wisdom of experience.

Spirit of Ever-Renewing Creation, create with me this new beginning and let it be blessed and a blessing for others.

Amen

Beginning Again: 2016

FullSizeRender

Dear Fellow Spiritual Journeyers,

Happy New Year! As we enter 2016, we here at Searching Sophia’s Pockets are excited to announce our newest endeavor: The Year of Prayer.

Instead of having monthly themes, every Wednesday, or #WisdomWednesday as well like to call them, we will be posting a prayer from around the world.

Like all our previous prayers, these are open for anyone to use and adapt to their own tradition and journey. Feel free to submit your prayers, or the ways in which you have adapted our prayers to us anytime at SophiasPockets@gmail.com.

We will also be posting the occasional longer post about how folks have experienced prayer along their global spiritual journeys.

Prayer, contemplation, and mediation factor into so many traditions, so many journeys that we are very excited to see where The Year of Prayer leads us all.

We look forward to exploring this aspect of spiritual journeys with you.

With Wisdom, Love …and Lint,

The Searching Sophia’s Pockets Team

A Prayer For Giving

As we explore GIVING, we here at Searching Sophia’s Pockets offer this prayer for all of us who are working, living, and feeling the spirit of GIVING. This prayer is just a template everyone is welcome to modify it, customize it, and re-create to better fit their own journey and beliefs. If you would like to share you re-creations, we welcome you to do so in the comment section, or to submit your own prayer.

God,

Let our gifts be blessings to others.

Help us to give from places of compassion and love, not recognition and guilt.

Let our giving be a gift of its own.

To give freely, from the best parts of our being.

Amen.
